Final Expense Insurance

Coverage designed to help families manage funeral, burial, cremation, medical bills and other end-of-life costs.

How it works

Final expense policies are usually smaller whole-life policies with simplified underwriting. Coverage generally stays in force for life as long as premiums are paid.

Who may benefit

Adults who want a dedicated amount for end-of-life costs or who do not have enough savings or existing life insurance may consider this option.

Important considerations

Some policies have graded benefits during the first years. Review waiting periods, exclusions and total premium cost.

Educational information only. Product availability, pricing and eligibility depend on state, carrier and underwriting.

Questions to review before applying

  • How long is coverage needed?
  • What premium fits the household budget?
  • Are benefits guaranteed or illustrated?
  • What exclusions, waiting periods or surrender charges apply?
  • How does this option compare with alternatives?

Final Expense Planning: A Deeper Review

Build the need before choosing the policy

Estimate funeral or cremation costs, cemetery expenses, transportation, death certificates, final medical bills, legal costs, household bills and a modest family transition fund. Existing savings and benefits can then be subtracted from the total.

Immediate versus graded benefits

Some policies may provide an immediate natural-death benefit after issue; others may have a graded or modified period depending on health and product rules. Accidental-death treatment may differ. Read the policy carefully.

Ownership and beneficiaries

Confirm who owns the policy, who is insured, who pays premiums and who receives the benefit. Review contingent beneficiaries and avoid naming a minor directly without understanding possible legal consequences.

Compare the full cost

Do not compare monthly premium alone. Compare benefit amount, waiting period, guarantees, cash value, payment duration and total expected premium.
